Fruity Beauty

We all know that getting 5 fruits and veggies a day is integral to your health, but personally, I love using fresh fruits for skin care treatments, too.  And I want to share some of my favorite fruity beauty tips with you here, made with apples, bananas and strawberries.  The classic apple, loved by all, is actually quite beneficial when made into a paste and used as a face mask; it helps to smooth your skin and prevent pimples, too.  Just blend up and smooth on the face—leave it on for 20 minutes and wash with warm water.  Bananas happen to be lovely for keeping hair healthy.  Try this great recipe for a Banana Hair Pack and you’ll see what I mean: grab a few ripe bananas, 1-2 tablespoons honey, 2-5 drops of almond oil, and 1 egg yolk.  Mix it all together in a blender until it becomes a smooth paste. Then, wet your hair with warm water and apply the paste to your hair. Cover your head with a shower cap or wrap your hair with a towel to ensure the pack penetrates deep into the roots and let it soak in for half an hour, then wash with a regular shampoo. The banana’s high potassium, Vitamin B and Vitamin C content helps protect hair from the damages caused by exposure to dirt, pollution and other toxins in the environment. The B vitamins are also effective in preventing split ends, and the recipe is great for dandruff too, as it helps your scalp retain moisture. It’s important to take good care of your hair while you have it, after all, you never quite know when the unwanted hair loss will set in!

Now how about strawberries?  I love a fresh strawberry mask during strawberry season and so does my face (and nose—it smells lovely!) Just mix ½ cup fresh strawberries with a tablespoon of sour cream for a weekly facial mask. The strawberry juice will tighten your skin and the cream adds precious emollient for dehydrated skin. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then wash off with warm water. Pat dry face and moisturize to seal in the moisture. If you don’t have sour cream at home, try yogurt or simply cut the strawberry into half and rub it all over your face gently and leave it on for 15-20 minutes.  Wash with warm water and moisturize and you’ll be ready to go!
