Simple Pleasures
Life seems to be getting more and more fast-paced and stressful over time. With the rapid growth in technology we are pushed to pack much more into a day and this sometimes comes at the expense of relationships, meaningful experiences, good health and simple pleasures. However, there is a growing movement to return to simple pleasures and valuing the simple and good things in life. Here are some ways in which you can start doing that today and enjoy a greater quality of life:
• Choose experience: go see a play, not movies; listen to bands instead of CDs; play charades instead of video games.
• Learn about other cultures through food.
• Reconnect with long-lost friends.
• Throw a surprise party for someone or do an unexpected favor.
• Get personal. Make a phone call, send a card or handwritten note, its much friendlier.
• Just do it something you’ve been wanting to do like training to hike a big mountain—after all, what are you waiting for?
• Get a hobby. Rekindle a childhood passion you’ve sidelined for lack of time.
• Sign up for a charity run/walk and support a good cause, meet new people and enjoy a sense of purpose.
• Take a night class in a subject that has nothing to do with your job. Or, learn a new language.
• Make mealtimes mindful. Decorate the table with candles and flowers, play music, say grace or a personal affirmation and eat consciously.
• Cultivate your spirit. Whether you look for it in a church or out in nature, find something that nourishes your soul.
• Get in the best shape of your life, whether you’re 23 or 73. Being fit and feeling good in your body is mentally and emotionally uplifting.
• Mark your calendar. Highlight the days you should do a breast self-exam.
• Flush all expired medications. Restock your first-aid kit if necessary.
• Refresh your routines.
• Unclutter your environment and spruce up your home.
• Plan your next vacation. The anticipation – checking out guidebooks and brochures, routes, activities – will infuse you with excitement.
